Re: Oolong Vendor Topic

I order from HY Chen via FB Messenger, others do so on Instagram. He then provides updated price list. I always do large group orders because I know he’s a small farmer producer and doesn’t really have infrastructure to do tinny sample orders. Thank you for the advice, good to know he’s still in bu...

Re: Oolong Vendor Topic

Hi everyone, Has anyone here ordered oolong from HauYing Chen recently? It’s been a few years for me, and I noticed the most recent teas on his website are from spring 2022. Wondering what would be the best way of getting in touch with him, and ordering a selection of his current offerings. Would be...

Re: What to brew when having a cold

That concoction certainly looks like it could cure something, debunix! Great list of suggestions, I will see which ones I can get my hands on and imitate you as best I can. Thanks for the kind words, Victoria! Ginger and lemon (sometimes with a bit of honey, if throat is especially sore) is pure med...

Let's see the offending pots?
Good idea! Don't have access to them at the moment, but I will take some pictures soon and get back to this subject.

Re: What to brew when having a cold

Also open for non-caffeinated options, of course. Bless you! If you mean herbal teas, I suggest 2 because their flavors are strong enough to get through the muting of a cold: jiaogulan and lemongrass. The lemongrass that I drink has some pandanmus leaf which takes some acidity away. When I don't ha...

What to brew when having a cold

'Tis the season to be phlegmatic, and I for one feel a cold coming on. The main bothers have yet to set in, but already aromatic oolongs, senchas or dan congs are out of the picture. Today I enjoyed some leftover Chinese black teas, nothing spectacular, but quite right for the job. In the past, shou...

Re: What Oolong Are You Drinking

^That is heavy brewing. In light of that, the following will make me seem even more of a wuss. Two days ago, I tried VC-parameters for the last of my sample of HY Chen Heavy roast, so brewed 10 grams using 180ml and steep times of 60s+. She did warn that she liked it pretty strong, and did suggest t...

Re: What Oolong Are You Drinking

If you guys are interested I can do a full review of their whole range in another thread (?). I wouldn't get at all mad if you did! Packaging and presentation look real nice, which usually makes me sceptical (as you said it should, actually, in the oolong vendor thread!). Only ugly puches and canis...

Re: Oriental Beauty & Difficulty of Categorizing

I was just about to open a new topic when stumbling upon this and thought my question might fit right in: I noticed that Oriental beauty seems to have quite a bit in common with Darjeeling teas. In this I would also include the Nepali varieties. Anyone else observe the same? I have, some more than ...

Re: What Oolong Are You Drinking

I got some really nice light-roast/green style TGY from Jing Tea Shop not that long ago, and made the mistake of opening the bag and not immediately vacuum sealing portions of it for better storage. The first few days it was brilliant, but it quickly lost that bright intense floral quality that I r...

Re: What Oolong Are You Drinking

I usually ignore all Black Friday shenanigans, but might take advantage of it this year to get some Tie Guan Yin of the greener kind, from various places I haven't bought from in a while. A good TGY was what turned me back onto serious tea, and oolongs in particular, after a slump a long time ago. A...

Re: What Oolong Are You Drinking

That looks and sounds pretty great. Is that a Kyoto-style cold glaze gaiwan? Interesting to hear how much leaf you are using Plod. Most morning lately I grab HY Chen’s Medium or High roast 100 year garden DongDing and use 12gr/240ml (8oz)/208f/70sec so my leaf to water ratio is 1.5: 1 . I like to hy...

Re: What Oolong Are You Drinking

Was this his Charcoal Heavy Roast 100 year garden? So rich. Yes! Agree. Like a pocket fireplace + brandy. Have tried out the light roast version a few times now. Very tasty and full, but less interesting than his others after a while. Has some roasted qualities, chocolate and nuts, combined with a ...

Re: What Oolong Are You Drinking

Got around to trying HY Chen's charcoal heavy roasted. Very robust, but smooth. Chocolatey-raisin aromas, some chocolate and baked whatnot in the taste. Mostly about the feel for me, though, which is great. I'd let the tea air in a little jar for four or five days, and it opened up quite a bit in th...

Re: What Oolong Are You Drinking

Okay, I'd just ask HY Chen for his unlisted 'Roasted High Mountain' Oolong. He had it listed last year so I just keep ordering it. It is both very good and very reasonably priced. Mon Dieu! I even mix it with his pricier Heavy and Medium Roasted 100 year garden oolongs ;) Ca alors! That settles it ...
